‘Becoming Andy: To Chosen Singularity’ by Avery Lake, A New Art Collection Exploring Identity in the AI Age

Warhol reimagined for the Intelligence Age with Becoming Andy. To Chosen Singularity

Avery Lake unveils Becoming Andy. To Chosen Singularity:  a conceptual art collection exploring identity, replication, and what makes us human in an era where anything can be generated by machine.

What if Andy Warhol had a neural network? What happens when repetition becomes generation?

Inspired by Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych, Becoming Andy brings questions of image, fame, and meaning into the algorithmic age. It asks how we find significance when machines can produce infinite Andys in seconds.

Ten years ago, I completed a PhD in bioethics. I watched as years of study could be replicated by machines in seconds. That raised a deeper question: what comes after disruption? This project is my unfolding response.
- Avery Lake

Rather than replicate, this series invites us to choose. To return from infinity to the singular. To make one version matter.

Rooted in over a decade of ethical research on AI and human enhancement, Becoming Andy is both intellectual and intimate. Each piece is intentionally unfinished - holding infinite possibility - until it becomes singular. It becomes a participatory meditation on meaning, authorship, and care.

"Machines can mimic, but they cannot mean," says Lake.
"Meaning begins when someone chooses to care."

What makes this collection unique:

  • Each work is a limited edition of one, co-completed with the collector and certified via blockchain (Verisart)
  • Participatory and unfinished by design, the format, medium, and final image are shaped through dialogue and choice
  • Rooted in ethics and philosophy, the collection draws from a decade of academic research on human enhancement and artificial intelligence
  • Warhol reimagined, with Triptychs, Polyptychs, and generative feeds that question value, identity, and authorship
  • A living generative archive, where new Andys appear continuously, but only one is made real through attention and care
  • Debut of Avery Lake, a multidisciplinary artist and ethicist working at the intersection of technology, culture, and meaning

Collection highlights

  • Andy Triptych – a contemporary response to Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych, expanded to three panels for a new era. The final work is co-created with the collector, who chooses which Andys appear in the third panel.
  • Andy Polyptych – a large-format composition built from hundreds of Andys curated from an infinite feed.
  • Andy Infinity – a living art experiment in which new Andys emerge continuously from prompt, code, chance, and intuition. One version can be selected, printed, and made real, but only once.
  • Andy Singular – from an infinite feed, a single Andy is chosen. It is printed on a collector-selected object such as canvas, hoodie, mug, or poster. Each version is signed, certified, and never repeated.
  • Mirror Making of Ceci est Andy  – a 16-tile conceptual portrait that folds analog and digital axes (Breath and Consciousness, Trace and Dust, Ink and Papyrus) and plays on Magritte’s famous phrase, reminding us that this is Andy, one of many yet singular.
  • Andy: Circles of Possibilities – This is infinity made singular. An infinity of Andys, through time and through tools..
  • Becoming Andy (Remix) – remixes of Lake’s earlier works (Saint Andy Warhol, Andy’s Given Breath, Errata: Warhol was wrong, Ecce Andy), reinterpreted through the Becoming Andy lens.
  • Becoming Avery Lake – and finally, I am becoming Avery Lake.

All works are limited editions of one. Unlike most limited editions, the physical format is not fixed. Each piece begins as a digital concept and remains unfinished until a collector selects the size and medium. Once chosen, the work is printed a single time, hand-signed by the artist, and certified through Verisart. This process ensures that each piece is both infinite in potential and finite in existence.

The manifesto and broader vision

The collection is accompanied by Lake’s manifesto, which asserts that art begins with breath, that creation is collaboration with tools rather than surrender, and that authenticity lies in the connection and the question behind the work. The manifesto is meant to be a foundational statement about meaning in the age of intelligence.

About Avery Lake

Avery Lake is a Canadian-based artist and ethicist. Drawing upon a decade of doctoral and postdoctoral research into human enhancement and the ethics of artificial intelligence, Lake brings a uniquely interdisciplinary perspective. Studies in theology in Vancouver, bioethics in Zurich, and philosophy in Oxford and Calgary have informed his thinking about personhood, intention, and ethics. After years working in the private sector on technology, design and culture, Lake now turns these insights toward art. Each piece in Becoming Andy asks what remains authentic when anything can be generated by machine and invites viewers to slow down and choose what matters.

Note: Avery Lake is the artist name of Dr. Johann Roduit
